Jill Scott Advanced Her HR Career With an Online MBA from UNC 

Jill Scott, UNC MBA in Human Resources Management graduateFor Jill Scott, the University of Northern Colorado isn’t just her alma mater—it’s the school she trusted to help elevate her from VP to the C-suite.  After earning her bachelor’s degree as a Bear in 2002, Jill spent nearly two decades building her career in human resources before deciding to take the next step. “Human resources have really become a major cornerstone of most organizations nowadays, a real strategic business partner,” she explained. “I wanted to elevate my career.” 

In 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, Jill enrolled in UNC’s online MBA in Human Resources Management program. The timing proved to be both challenging and transformative. “That was quite the experience, living through [COVID-19] and going through a master’s program,” she recalled. Despite the unique challenges she faced, Jill knew that an advanced degree could transform her future. “I did a lot of research,” she stated. “The entire program was quite well thought out.” 

A Program Built for Working Professionals 

As the mother of two boys and a full-time HR professional, Jill needed flexibility—and UNC delivered. The 100% online coursework allowed her to study on her schedule, while the seven-week accelerated courses kept her progressing toward her goal. “The balance between school and work … it was somewhat challenging but very doable,” Jill said. “You just have to make sure you set boundaries.” 

One of the aspects that stood out most while earning a human resources MBA online was the support Jill received. “I was pretty nervous about starting the program,” she recalled, but her concerns quickly faded. “The faculty have been great. They definitely understand how to work with non-traditional students and are willing to do whatever they need to do to make you successful.” 

Real-World Impact and Career Advancement 

During her time in the online MBA HR program, Jill was excited to discover that the curriculum was both relevant to her current work and designed to empower her with new expertise. “The material was always presented in a way that was applicable and something that you could relate to easily,” she said. “I enjoyed the marketing classes because it’s a little bit outside of what I get to do.” 

The investment paid off quickly. Upon earning her MBA in 2021, Jill advanced from a vice president role to her current position as Chief Human Resources Officer and Director of Administration for Weld County Government. “I feel like I’m really achieving my career goals right now,” Jill said. 

Her new role allows her to address critical community issues, help those in need, and improve the quality of life for her loved ones. “I get the opportunity to be a leader in my community,” she said. “It’s been a very positive impact on my life and my family’s life.” 

An Investment in Family and Future 

Bringing her sons to her graduation ceremony was one of Jill’s proudest moments. “We had our boys come and attend my graduation to understand the importance of education,” she explained. “It’s important for them to understand that both their parents are highly educated individuals who have been successful and able to provide for them in a way that is pretty comfortable.” 

When asked if the journey was worth it, Jill’s answer was emphatic. “There is a cost, obviously—a dollar cost, there is a cost timewise—but it is worth it,” she declared. “It’s an investment in you, it’s an investment in your future, and it’s an investment in your family.” 

Her advice to prospective students considering their own educational journey? “Do it. You won’t regret it.” The University of Northern Colorado’s supportive community, practical curriculum and flexible format made her success possible. “Once a Bear, always a Bear,” Jill said with pride. “I really, truly enjoyed the journey.”
