History of UNC and Monfort College of Business
On April 1, 1889, the governor of Colorado signed the bill creating the State Normal School to train qualified teachers for the state’s public schools. Citizens of Greeley, Colorado, where the university is located, raised the necessary money for the first building, and the cornerstone was laid on June 13, 1890. The school opened its doors on Oct. 6 with a staff of four instructors and 96 students. Certificates were granted upon the completion of a two-year course of study.
In 1911, the school’s name was changed to Colorado State Teachers College by the state legislature. The college was then offering four years of undergraduate work and granting the Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1970, the name was changed to the University of Northern Colorado.
In 1968, the School of Business was created. They offered multiple undergraduate programs, an M.B.A. and a doctoral program. In 1984, the School of Business became the College of Business Administration. In 1999, it was renamed the Monfort College of Business in honor of cattleman and long-time Colorado statesman Kenneth W. Monfort.
In 2004, the Monfort College of Business became the first business college to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award – the nation’s highest honor for quality and performance excellence.
