In which online program do you teach?

MBA with an Emphasis in Human Resources

Which class do you teach online?

MBA 681: Talent Management; MBA 683: Compensation, Rewards & Performance Management

What do you want students to learn in these courses? What is the expected learning outcome?

The overarching outcome from the HR courses I teach is to value HR in non-traditional ways. Great companies don't use their HR departments for the sole purposes of handbooks, policies and rules. Instead, great companies utilize HR to build a great culture. The projects, materials and discussions we have will focus on how HR leads this important effort.

What types of projects can online students expect in your courses?

Discussion boards, research projects and video presentations

Why did you start teaching?

I love learning and I love using research insights to help students gain confidence to becoming better leaders. Truth be told, I'm not a teacher—I'm a facilitator, and my number one job is to create a positive culture where discussions carry the learning process.

What advice would you give to those considering this online program?

If a student has never taken an online course (undergrad or graduate), my first advice is to stay on top of your coursework. It's easy to let things slide, but that will only limit the amount of learning you'll gain from this type of program.

What is the one book you think everyone should read?

"Crucial Accountability" by Kerry Patterson, Joseph Grenny, Ron McMillan, Al Switzler and David Maxfield

What do you want students to learn in these courses? What is the expected learning outcome?

A general understanding of "big data," statistical "data snooping" techniques and data visualization techniques. I'd like to see students become skilled in working with large data sets and in extracting useful information from the analysis—and then use tools to visualize their analysis for others.

Tell us something interesting about yourself that your students might not know.

While I have enjoyed the many blessings from a career in higher education and being an entrepreneur, I take more pride in my marriage to Jaymie (29 years) and being a dad to Emiley (19) and Annika (17). The dad-of-college-age-girls is my new chapter, and I love seeing them navigate their own lives as they explore their careers.
